My concert review (HOB/Sunset Strip/03/11/01)

Well, the weather cooperated (thankfully) and it didn't rain! The doors opened around 6:30-ish. The first (and only other) act Jeremy from RCA Records came on around 7:30-ish. Dogstar came on around 8:30-ish. The HOB was pretty packed and I think the guys were pretty surprised by the large turnout on a Sunday evening (well, Bret kept remarking about it).

First the fashion report, Bret wore a black t-shirt (no v-neck, sorry ladies with a Bret chest fixation. LOL!), black jeans and I couldn't see his shoes. Rob also wore a black t-shirt and I believe Khaki pants. Keanu was clean shaven at this gig, with a dark t-shirt, blue jeans, a black beanie cap and boots.

They opened with Alarming, and played (not in the correct order and I'm leaving out a few songs, sorry!) Slipping Down, Enemies, Halo, Swimming, and a few I hadn't heard before. I think one was called 'I confess'? Not sure if tha's the *exact* title? Bret made a comment about the new song saying that,"It was so new, to hear it, you'd have to be standing outside Rob's house..." LOL! For the encore, Bret came out and sang Wish you were here (just him and his guitar. He thanked the people from Japan from flying all the way from Japan to be there (ah nice). He then also thanked Jeremy, 'cause he was just a guy with a guitar, you know? :) )

They then came out and sang Blessed, then did the Prince song "Purple Rain" (Well, not all of it, they didn't know all of it, but it was neat none the less. They finished with Denial (one of my faves!). Bret said thanks it's the most fun they'd had in a while. As an aside, someone threw flowers up at Keanu and then someone else gave him a book. Bret also got some blue beads and he picked them up and asked if they were religious or Mardi Gras. Then he said it was Mardi Gras religion. :) Sorry if there are typos or if there are any mistakes.Other people can tell their dogstar experience. It's late, I'm tired, but I had a good time overall. Personally, I thought the guys rocked, but I am a FAN! :) I hope everyone else who attended had a good time as well (I did see some glo sticks out there! :) )! Good night all!

that they played History Light and Bret did a bit more talking, but I didn't get everything he said. Also, Bret came over to Keanu's side of the stage a few times and Keanu did the same (sort of playing for each other). At one point, Keanu came over to Bret's side and stuck out his tongue!? I have no idea what that was about??? Keanu did say 'thank you' to some people in the audience and smile (he did that a few times), but I'm not sure *exactly* who it was directed at (I did see all ages at this show, even some young kids!)? That's all I can think of right now (I'm sure everyone else had a different concert experience, but that was mine, viewed from the back of the room). I'm glad my review helped pick you up fajame! I'm sure one day you'll get to see the guys!!! :) I actually liked that they played Purple Rain (though I can't say I'm a BIG Prince fan). I guess it was so unexpected! All in all, I'm glad I went, I didn't know if I was going to be able to, but luckily I was able to at the last minute! I hope everyone is having a nice Monday (no hangover for me (luckily), but my ears are kind of ringing! LOL!) I'd also love to hear everyone else's review!

At the beginning when the curtain opened and they were playing Alarming, I swear Bret had a look on his face like can you believe all these people are here!? He even turned to Rob and said or did something!? Like I said, it was pretty packed (people filled the entire dance floor, the sides, the back, the back by the bar, the balconies etc... People, people everywhere! I don't know how many people the HOB holds, but I bet it was near capacity!?) I also remembered at the end (last song) Rob came bounding out from behind his drum set and did a little dance and said thanks! It was cute! Keanu did said thank you and so did Bret. I got the impression that Bret was really energized by the large audience. I mean, they all seemed to really be into it and I thought they played well. Okay, last post. I'm being a board hog! Blah, blah, blah. Oh yeah, I didn't see Myles, but that doesn't mean he wasn't there! Take care!

My not so detailed review! LOL

Okay, so I am gonna take my turn at this. I was at the gig last night and the first thing I must say is the guys were TIGHT! T-I-G-H-T TIGHT! I mean, they didn't miss a beat.

I was truly impressed with last night's performance. musiclvr has provided a lot of the highlights, so there isn't much more to add. I was just grateful that the sound guys (or gals) knew what they were doing. From what I could tell, that area was covered, which is nice considering they have had some crappy experiences with sound in the past and it really ruins the whole mood. The room was electric with energy that fed the guys and then they fed it back to us. It was awesome.

Bret was fabulous and Rob was so cute on the drums. He was so expressive and into the music. And then there is Keanu. What to say about Keanu. He is simply a doll. You can always tell what songs are really his favorites. He does like Cornerstore because he always sings along and when they start Stagger he always has this little jump and he just really rocks out.

At one point he was so involved in the music and his playing that I noticed he was sticking his tonue out just a little like he was really concentrating. It was adorable. I think we are so lucky to be fans of such an adorable group!! Bret's voice just really tells you how much each song means to him and watching Rob on drums is amazing and then of course Keanu. They both love their music and their fans and it is obvious!! There was a little interaction with the audience.

Enough that they felt included. And at the end of the concert, each guy was sure to thank the audience. Bret thanked us all night and Rob did the little jig with the huge smile and thank you. Then Keanu did his signature touch to the heart and point/wave to the audience as he mouthed thank you to everyone. I had an absolute blast. It was almost like I was seeing them for the first time again. That is how good they were. I can't wait for the next gig and Bret better be looking for me at the Viper Room because I will be there with bells on! LOL Take care and have a great day! Renee

Hi I'm coming up to Japan safely.

At first I would like to thank to Janice,Ah-nutts,LafemmeVictoria,Spuddie,D*friend,Tess Alexis,Keana,Renee and your husband,And the girls I met and my friends Akemi, some girls from Japan.

The concert was very awesome.I began to make a line at 15:30,and I met the some girls I met at the Chicago show(Hi!) and the Vegas show and Akemi.I confess that I felt so bad that I took some medicine then ,but It was miracle that I felt better when I came to the venue.LOL. Dogstar's concert and the fans may be our all-powerful medicine!!(LOL).

At 17:00,Janice and the other girls arrived.Ah-nutts and Janice! You are so kind. I believe that you brought a big white cloth (perhaps about 3 yards of cloth). We,every fans from this doggies board wrote messages to Dogstar's members.(I would like to read your whole messages!!) It was some exciting. Please tell us what you wrote in it,if your possible. I wrote an ordinary message "Thanks for your great show" perhaps.(because of medicine I can't remember clearly)

At 18:30 We entered the venue.I was in the 1st row, center and Janice was behind me.And Spuddie and her friends ,Akemi, some girls from Japan were in the 2nd row, right side. And 3 Chinese girls next to me told me that they are living in LA and come to the doggies concert for the first time.2 girls behind me ,one girl from Hong Kong and the other girl from Indonesia. Really we came together from the whole world to rock out with Dogstar!!.

At 19:30 The opening band was 1 guy only.He sang his folk song with his guitar. He took care of the fans who were waiting Dogstar impatiently.I cannot remember lyrics,But I think I listen to them carefully to love them. The guy finished at some minutes past eight o'clock.

At 20:30.I expected that their usual set list.At the biginning, they played "Alarming",one of my favorites!!. Their set list is here(perhaps... I always take note their setlists after the show, but I could not remember them perfectly this time

  1. Alarming
  2. Slipping Down
  3. Halo
  4. Corner Store
  5. Enemies
  6. (New song, title unknown)
  7. Your World
  8. Stagger
  9. Dream Time
  10. Swim
  11. Good bye
  12. Blown Away
  13. Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyed cover,at encore)
  14. The purple(Prince cover ,at encore,I cannot the title Thanks musiclvr!!)
  15. Blessed!(at encore)
  16. Denial(at encore)

The detail is from the left to the right from my viewpoint.

Bret...

You are a hot vocal and guitar player!!

I love his guitar riff in "Enemies","Swim","Good bye" and "Blown Away" and REAL ENCORE(perhaps..) "Purple Rain" (LOL)especially. And His voice was very great and wide and He rocked perfectly and enlightened me about Rock'n Roll so much. After the show I thought Bret was more great than the Vegas show, last show I attended.

Rob...

You are a exciting drummer!! I was in the center,I saw Rob beating his drums clearly. He was beating with singing their lyrics. He seemed to be something clazy. He supported his band behind the vocal and the base, sometimes he gave his naughty gaze to the audience. (But I CAN NOT SAY THAT THE OTHER PERSON IS CLAZY,Sorry to Rob. And I thank to Bret and the band so much, but I can not remember Bret's words. HAHAHA(^^; -sweating -sweating -sweating...So I don't like seeing the audience in "The Gladiator")

Keanu...

You are a cool base guitar player!! The hot eyes of girls around me were fixed on him. But I felt that the atmosphere around him was changed into cooler than the Vegas show. He was thinner, also.I guess the training is very hard.He kept his base stable but with his passion. When the girl behind me "Keanu I love you! ",He responded and shouted "You Remember!".He is such a nice guy!

In the right more...the band entrance from the dressing room Dogstar's staff was standing there.I saw the staff was laughing so much, when Bret began "Purple Rain".Rob was beating his drums. but Bret seemed to forget the lyrics and Keanu grinned and raise his base up.But as musiclvr said,it was very fun. I love this live!!

In a means the show was held like as in Japan. From the audience 2 beads necklace were thrown toward Bret and Keanu and the heartfelt souvenir,Japnese sake(rice wine) and some books were handed to Keanu. And from the this messageboard a big cloth signed by the almost fans. (Thanks Ah-nutts,and Janice,Sonya,Victoria,Spuddie, the other fans I can not remember, you are very gracious!!)

It was energetic and electric and refreshing for my soul (By the way my family said "Your seemed to be feel so good" in my coming back). Thanks so much to Dogstar and the fans I met.You are so great!!!! I'm proud that I could meet you at the venue.I believe that we will meet somewhere. You did a great work.

To the people I can not remember your name,If your possible, please e-mail to me.By the way in Japan it's cold now,I want to stay in LA more...LOL(^^).

Thanks again and take care guys!!

Miho

P.S.Thanks for your reading and time.Sorry for my some mistakes.

Well what can I say? Except I had a blast of meeting and hugging each and every one of you.. and it was an experience I will never forget. I will start off by arriving at the show.. I wasn't going to post.. but I felt I had to.. since a few people wanted to see me have a bad time and wanted the boys to perform bad which I didn't think they did. Miho, thank you for your genuine friendship, you are a beautiful woman and so much passion and energy for Dogstar. Rocking out with you on Bret's side was an experience I will never forget.. Meeting Akemi was also amazing and thank you for your genuine friendship as well as your passion and energy.

I arrived at 17;00 with Victoria, Her friend Becky, D*Fiend, and Victoria's friend John.. Who himself, is an amazing performer, since I saw him the night before with Victoria at his show.. I hope to see you again someday, and thank you for coming to Dogstar with us and for your cd. It is treasured.. I had a great time meeting everyone. Kris, Spuddie, AhNutts, Sandy, Sonya, her cousin Jill ( what a blast she was ).. Bichomalo..Sorry I can't remember everyone LOL !!! I had a girl in back of AHNutts giving me dirty looks all night.. (wonder who she was) as well as at the show too.. Like I was supposed to be afraid LOL NOT!! I brought a bed sheet with me.. and everyone was wondering why i brought one with me LOL!!! I brought it with me to get everyone that came to sign it.. and put where they were from so Dogstar could see how their music brings all of us together, to thank them for everything they do and give our autographs for once. In between running around.. I was with Patty when we caught Rob doing a soundcheck.. I decided we should casually stroll in.. and watch for a few then leave. I screamed woo-woo LOL he looked up and what seemed to be a smile. :).. and Patty and I were waving our arms around too to get his attention.. I don't recall being kicked out tho LOL. I thought it was time to go so I said ok let's move.. In between running around and having everyone sign their sheet and put what they wanted to say.. I brought Miho and Akemi in to see the guys doing the soundcheck. By that time Bret and Keanu were on stage looking good and Jamming.. Bret had on his leather jacket too woo-hoo!!..and Keanu had his grunge hat on and his boots and jeans.. and I can't remember what color shirt... sorry.. I was supposed to be having dinner with the group .. but as I said I was running around getting everyone to sign the sheet. I noticed people started lining up at the stage.. I was already allowed in cause my stub was removed and I had my id on my wrist to be able to drink. Jeremy came on.. folk singer with just him and his guitar.. he was I thought not bad.. I really enjoyed his song he wrote for his Son (Hopefully) he has on the way.. titled "welcome to our world"..

Finally after waiting.. I realized I was on Keanu's side with Spuddie and Kris.. and decided to switch so I could be on Bret's side.. There were three japanese girls next to me who had no problems switching with me.. and I thank them for that. I was 2nd row center behind Miho a little to the left of Bret's side.. The curtain was closed....and someone from Bret's side stuck their foot out under the curtain LOL.. so Miho and I began chanting Bret's name LOL! What fun we had.. Miho is so full of energy and passion.. Love ya Miho and Akemi.. You guys are just amazing.. anyway.. the curtain opened and Dogstar appeared.. I could finally see Rob.. behind the drums woo-hoo!!.. Bret looked very very hot. as well as Keanu.. Like him with the long hair and the hats he wears...I can't remember which songs they started off with or what they did in order, I did write all the songs they did however..

Rob also looked very hot.. Performance wise I thought they were excellent.. Bret played his guitar right in front of us.. I've never seen him perform with so much passion and energy before it really took my breath away as well as Rob pounding away without a care in the world on his drums and singing along.. and Keanu was also very good (I thought) for his bass playing.. I was very happy to see Bret do Pink Floyd's wish you were here.. Which I thought Bret did amazingly well.. and was happy I got to see a Bret solo LOL.. finally yay woo-hoo!!!!!!!..

The songs not in order that I remember..
1. Alarming 2. Enemies 3. Halo 4. Blessed ( new song ) 6. Apologies ( new song ) 7. Goodbye 8. Denial .9 Wish you were here 10. Cornerstore 11. A Dreamtime 12. Stagger 13. Slipping Down 14. Purple Rain ( a little bit of it LOL ) 15. and I believe another Pink Floyd song.. Am I Correct on all the songs?

LOL A couple items were thrown up to Keanu as well as mardi gras beads to Bret and the banner that miho and I threw up, and a bouqet of flowers. That Bret took backstage. he then came out said it was "Pretty cool that people from Japan are here". and thanked everyone for coming out. and did the wish you were here solo. He and Rob seemed a bit moved by it. On my opinion in all honesty.. I thought Bret and Rob played with alot of passion and energy.. Keanu seemed happy to be there and smiling alot.. and enjoyed playing and conversing with Bret..Bret wasn't as active as he was in Chicago last year, with talking wise..

But you can't have everything LOL Performance wise, the band took my breath away.. If at all possible I thought they were better than Chicago.. Although I did miss Bret's interaction as he had with us in Chicago. Dogstar completely Rocked me.. and they took my breath away.. it was worth the money I spent.. I had a great time.. I would fly again to see them. and I had a wonderful time meeting the fans. my new friends. You are all great people and I had a great time with all of you at the show. Spuddie I'm sorry, you didn't like it as much as we did.. I thought we really hit it off, and I treasure your friendship as well. You are awesome as well as Kris.. Sonya, Jill, Victoria, Becky, Patty, Bichomalo, Akemi, Miho, AhNutts.. Julia, Nena.. You know who you all are.. LOL >> Thank you for the most wonderful experience. Rob thank you for booking the shows.. YOU ROCK..... DOGSTAR AND THEIR FANS ROCK!!!! Janice
