AFTER HE WON THE MTV MOVIE AWARDFOR BEST MALE PERFORMANCE IN "THE MATRIX
Date:2000/Jun/04
From:http://www.la.com/entertainment/gossip/default.asp
First up:Reeves Drive

Keanu Reeves came back to the press room....an amazing thing in itself because Reeves doesn't play the Hollywood game and can be difficult. But there he was in his brown suit, scuffed hiking boots and green shirt. Guess what...he handled himself beautifully and is very sophisticated. When no questions were immediately forthcoming he started to make the reply of the McCarthy-Communist hearings, "I have not, nor have ever been, etc"....pretty funny. When someone finally asked him an original question, he smiled and seemed to enjoy the mental challenge. The question was, "which power would you like to have in real life"? Reeves replied, "healing"...great answer. He loves San Francisco but wasn't able to dine out...perhaps fear of the public or just a busy schedule but he did get to enjoy the Petaluma wine. His band Dogstar has a record coming out. When I got to talk to Reeves privately I had to bite my tongue not to ask him if he planned to try to have another baby....just thought it would be to painful for him to talk about. But he did tell me he still hasn't bought a house...he likes to live rootlessly or at least he did before he received his $60 million for the next "The Matrix" films. His humble reply about all that money, "It is nice to be able to earn a living as an actor." 6/4/00

The Matrix: Stunning visual effects The sci-fi blockbuster The Matrix has won three prizes, including best movie, at the annual MTV Movie Awards.

At the ceremony in Los Angeles, actor Keanu Reeves walked off with the best male performance trophy for his role as Neo in the film, sharing the best fight prize with co-star Laurence Fishburne.

The Matrix, in which the world is merely an electronic program run as a form of prison to control humans, won four Oscars in March.

Plans are under way to shoot two back-to-back sequels in Australia, set for release in Christmas 2002 and the summer of 2003.

Lips sync

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar snapped up the award for best female performance for her role in the film Cruel Intentions, a contemporary update of Les Liaisons Dangereuses targeted at a teen audience.

She also received the trophy for the best kiss between her and co-star Selma Blair.

"I just want to thank Selma for my most rewarding kiss on-screen ever," said Gellar, star of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, said before turning to Blair and giving her a quick smooch on the lips.

For her part, Blair thanked Gellar for the "hours of practice".

Spoof victory

The other multiple winners of the night was the spy spoof Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

The Austin Powers sequel was honoured for best villain played by Mike Myers. He was also honoured for the best on-screen duo with Verne Troyer, a smaller and more sinister clone of Myers' evil character.

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, picked up an award for the best musical performance for a song from the big screen version of their television show.

Other winners included The Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment who picked up the breakthrough male performance prize. Julia Stiles of 10 Things I Hate About You won the corresponding female prize.

The show, hosted by actress Sarah Jessica Parker, is to be broadcast on Thursday in the US, and on Saturday on MTV's UK and Ireland service.

The MTV Movie Awards aim to be a hipper alternative to the staid Oscars. The winners were based on a US nationwide poll of MTV viewers, who began casting votes in April.

MTV AWARDS: COCKTAIL OF FILM, FUN

At the loud, raucous party after Saturday's MTV Movie Awards, president Judy McGrath described the kudocast as "an affectionate alternative to reverential awards shows." Chairman Tom Freston said the kudos "are not about the metaphysical parts of the film industry. This is about the fun of movies."

Fun, but important enough fun for the likes of George Lucas, Nicolas Cage, Mel Gibson, Keanu Reeves, Janet Jackson, Adam Sandler and Cameron Diaz to participate in the Sony lot taping.

A key reason for their presence, in the words of producer Joel Silver (whose "The Matrix" won best movie), is that MTV serves as "a direct hypodermic into our target audience."

Ireverence in mix

It's this potent cocktail of light fun, demographic importance and irreverence that gives the show an edge that, say, the Daytime Emmys will never have.

It's light fun to present a best villain award, but there's an edge to the moment when presenter Mark Wahlberg cuts short reading the nominees list to say: "Let's just give it to Charlton Heston for being head of the NRA." (Mike Myers was the actual winner for "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.")

Or when Sarah Michelle Gellar, who along with Selma Blair won best kiss for their prolonged lesbian lip-lock in "Cruel Intentions," began by saying "My mother's going to be so proud of this," and ended by thanking director Roger Kumble and producer Neal Moritz "for being the sick perverts they are." (Mortiz' backstage comment was: "That's right -- and proud of it.")

Certainly the Oscars haven't seen a moment like the one when Matt Stone (who, with Trey Parker, won best musical performance for "Uncle F**ka" in "South Park") used his acceptance speech "to thank the MTV viewers for not even nominating Phil Collins."

'Matrix' plus 'Sex'

High points from the non-awards part of the show included performances by D'Angelo, 'N Sync and Metallica, plus the clever opening video where host Sarah Jessica Parker and "SNL's" Jimmy Fallon (as Keanu Reeves) were thrown into a world that mixed "The Matrix" with "Sex & the City"; and Ben Stiller did a dead-on impression as Tom Cruise's reality-challenged stunt double in a video that featured both the "MI:2" star and director John Woo.

The "South Park" creators contributed a funny segment in which characters from "Gladiator" and "Battlefield Earth" fight it out at the Coliseum. And the In Memoriam interlude to recently deceased stars paid homage to cinematic animals: the canine Hooch, from "Turner & Hooch," succumbing to physician-assisted suicide; Bobo, the gorilla in "Congo," dying in a hang-gliding accident; and Damon, the ground hog in "Caddy Shack," being killed by a lawn dart.

The video in which the question "Who writes this awards show patter?" was answered, with a parody of Bruce Vilanch at work (played by David Cross), was too industry-inside and fell flat. Don't bet on this making it into Thursday's 9 p.m. broadcast.

Following is a complete list of winners:

  1. Best Movie: The Matrix

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Warner Bros.' blockbuster "The Matrix" and its star, Keanu Reeves, swept three categories Saturday at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards: best movie, male performance and fight sequence (between Reeves and Laurence Fishburne).

Host Sarah Jessica Parker launched the program, which airs at 9 p.m. Thursday, with the hilarious short film spoof "Sex and the Matrix" featuring Vince Vaughn and "Saturday Night Live's" Jimmy Fallon.

One of the best-received short film spoofs, directed by show producer Joel Gallen, featured Tom Cruise, John Woo and Ben Stiller as Tom Crooze, a stunt double and wannabe action star who mimics Cruise and provides idiotic suggestions. "I would never tell Woo to his face, but there's just too much kicking, too much kick," Stiller deadpanned.

Sarah Michelle Gellar won best female performance for her role in Sony's "Cruel Intentions," beating out Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Julia Roberts and Ashley Judd.

Baby-talking boxoffice draw Adam Sandler topped Mike Myers for best comedic performance in Sony's "Big Daddy," proving Sandler's teen appeal among the 8 million voters who cast ballots mostly on MTV's Web site and at Blockbuster video stores.

Sandler broke up a packed house at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City when he read a letter purportedly penned by "Big Daddy" co-star Joey Lauren Adams that spoke of "nippies, boobies" and "Grandma's hairy underpants."

Myers won best villain honors for his performance in the New Line Cinema sequel "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me." Myers and Verne Troyer (Mini-Me) were named best on-screen duo.

Haley Joel Osment, Bruce Willis' co-star in Buena Vista's "The Sixth Sense," won for male breakthrough performance. Julia Stiles won for female breakthrough performance for her role in Buena Vista's "10 Things I Hate About You."

Matt Stone and Trey Parker won best musical performance for profanity-laced "Uncle Fucka" from Paramount's animated feature "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut."

Reflecting today's youthful intrigue with nonconformist sexuality, Gellar and Selma Blair won top honors for best kiss in "Cruel Intentions."

Science fiction and special effects stalwart George Lucas won best action sequence for the pod race in Fox's prequel "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" and was on hand to receive the award.

Veteran music video and television commercial director Spike Jonze won best new filmmaker honors for his directorial debut on USA Films' "Being John Malkovich."

The awards were punctuated with performances by such acts as D'Angelo with a fiery "Devil's Pie," 'N Sync with "It's Gonna Be Me" and Metallica with its hit single from Paramount's summer boxoffice topper "Mission: Impossible 2."

Presenters included Gellar, George Clooney, Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Mel Gibson, Mark Wahlberg, Aaliyah, Ryan Phillippe, Amy Smart, Jason Biggs, Jamie Foxx, Seth Green, Katie Holmes, Ice Cube, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Klein, Freddie Prinze Jr., Mena Suvari, Tom Green, Denise Richards, Q-Tip and Nicolas Cage.

Keanu Tops MTV Movie Awards
Date:2000/Jun/04

To sum up this year’s MTV Movie Awards, perhaps master thespian Keanu Reeves said it best:

"Whoa."

Ah, the word rings as true today as it did when he first uttered the phrase in his techno-thriller The Matrix--which, incidentally, took home three awards Saturday, including Best Movie, at MTV’s ninth annual anti-Oscars.

Reeves also snagged the prized golden tub of popcorn for Best Male Performance and Best Fight (with Laurence Fishburne), in a ceremony that stayed true to its offbeat and off-color roots. The show, hosted by Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker and taped at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, offered up its traditional round of movie parodies and acceptance speeches most actors only wish they could say at the Oscars. (Except most MTV winners aren’t nominated for Oscars.)

Among the, um, highlights: Mark Wahlberg picked his own nominee for Best Villain ("let's give it to Charlton Heston for being head of the NRA"), Samuel L. Jackson offered up a speech that’ll need very careful bleeping, and Sarah Michelle Gellar got wet and sloppy both with fellow Best Kiss winner Selma Blair, and with boyfriend Freddie Prinze Jr.

Oh yeah, and there were awards, too. Aside from her Best Kiss prize, Gellar also took home Best Female Performance honors for her role as the temptress in the Dangerous Liaisons teen update, Cruel Intentions.

Mike Myers took home two awards for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me: Best Villain for his role as the lovable Dr. Evil, and Best On-Screen Duo, with Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer. Best comedic performance honors went to Adam Sandler for Big Daddy.

Retribution also came for Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who were snubbed Oscar night for their South Park anthem "Blame Canada," but took home MTV’s prize for another tune from the film, "Uncle Fucka."

"When I wrote the song 'Uncle Fucka' I didn't realize it would touch so many lives," Parker said backstage.

Hmmm, it must have been the fart solo.

The MTV awards are chosen by the viewers themselves, who cast some eight million ballots for their favorite flicks. The show will air Thursday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on MTV.

Here’s a complete list of the winners:

  1. Best Movie: The Matrix
  2. Best Male Performance: Keanu Reeves, The Matrix
  3. Best Female Performance: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Cruel Intentions
  4. Breakthrough Performance, Male: Haley Joel Osment, The Sixth Sense
  5. Breakthrough Performance, Female: Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You
  6. Best Villain: Mike Myers, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
  7. Best Musical Performance: "Uncle Fucka," Matt Stone and Trey Parker, South Park
  8. Best Comedic Performance: Adam Sandler, Big Daddy
  9. Best On-Screen Duo: Mike Myers and Verne Troyer, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
  10. Best Kiss: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair, Cruel Intentions
  11. Best Action Sequence: “The Pod Race,” Star Wars: Episode I--The Phantom Menace
  12. Best Fight: Keanu Reeves vs. Laurence Fishburne, The Matrix
  13. Best New Filmmaker: Spike Jonze, Being John Malkovich
