In January 2000 Reeves and his then-girlfriend, Jennifer Syme, 29, buried their child, a girl named Ava, who had been stillborn at 8 months. The grief proved too much for their relationship, which ended several weeks later. But they remained close friends, even brunching together as recently as April 1 at Crepes on Cole in San Francisco. Just one day later, a much shaken Reeves called the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office and asked, according to Lt. Mac Willie, "if Jen Syme was there."

Sadly, she was. Shortly after 6 a.m. on April 2, Syme, who worked in the recording industry, lost control of her 1999 Jeep Cherokee on L.A.'s Cahuenga Boulevard, sideswiped three parked cars, rolled over several times and was thrown from the car. Authorities believe she died instantly, but they are awaiting toxicology tests to determine the final cause of death. Her loss is the latest in a long series of hardships for the reclusive star. The autopsy was carried out today but the official cause of death was deferred pending further tests for drugs and alcohol found in her system.

Filming of the sequel has been delayed because of the tragedy.

Syme worked in the music industry. She had also been an assistant to movie producer David Lynch and was also seen in his film Lost Highway.

Reeves and Syme did not live together, nor were there plans to get married, but they were a couple and he had expressed his desire to play an important part in his daughter's life.

Reeves' own father, Samuel, a convicted drug addict, had played little part in his life and Reeves had told friends that he would not make the same mistakes.

Lt Corral said investigators were at a loss as to how Syme crashed into the parked vehicles.

Her vehicle flipped on impact and she was thrown out.

Miss Syme, who worked in the record industry, had also been involved in a minor accident on March 27 and was being treated for back pain. She had not been wearing a seatbelt when she was killed.

Hayley Prece of the Los Angeles Police Department said: "For unknown reasons, she collided into three parked vehicles. The collision resulted in the Cherokee overturning on the roadway, causing her to be partially ejected. She was instantly killed."

There had been speculation last year as to whether Reeves and Miss Syme were still a couple, however the spokesman for the LA coroner said the actor had called them on Tuesday to confirm her identity and say that she had still been his girlfriend.

Reeves, 35, was heartbroken after the pair’s daughter was stillborn. He had been boasting to friends about becoming a father for months and had even bought a house in LA for Miss Syme and their daughter to live in.

But an ultrasound test at the end of 1999 revealed the baby, who had been due in January of last year, had died in the womb.

"Jennifer had become alarmed when she had not felt the baby move for several days, and so they rushed her to hospital," said a source.

"Keanu was right by her side all the way through the ordeal. He held her hand, they both cried."

Doctors induced labour and the heartbroken couple buried the baby girl in an LA cemetery. The pair had no plans to marry at the time and after the birth their relationship apparently cooled before growing stronger.

Miss Syme was a former assistant to filmmaker David Lynch and also to controversial rocker Marilyn Manson. She met Reeves through record industry friends at a party where Reeves was promoting his rock band DogStar.

The Hollywood star has been hit by a series of tragedies since childhood.

He was born in Lebanon in 1964 to an English showgirl and a Chinese-Hawaiian father.

His father, Samuel, abandoned the family when he was two and served time in prison for drug possession.

Reeves had three stepfathers and switched schools four times.

When his sister, Kim, was diagnosed with cancer, Reeves was her constant companion, helping her through her gruelling treatments.

The actor has also been caught by police doing 120mph in his Porsche and has had a series of motorbike accidents that have left him with a broken ankle, a ruptured spleen and a steel plate in his neck.

Inside the Jeep, police found two rolled-up dollar bills, along with a white powdery substance and two different anti-depressant drugs, according to a broadcast report.

The anti-depressants were prescribed to Syme after the child she was carrying by Reeves was stillborn Christmas Eve 1999, according to the report. The couple reportedly split up last year.

The tragedy comes after Jennifer lost the couple's baby daughter Ava, who died in the womb at Christmas 1999 days before she was due.

A coroner's spokesman said after Jennifer's death crash: "Police found two rolled up dollar bills with a white powder in her car that we will be testing for drugs."

They also found prescriptions for anti-depressants.

Police said: "It is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor."

Keanu was told of Jennifer's death by her mother, who had to identify her body.

The couple's baby tragedy threatened to destroy their relationship but friends said it had recently grown stronger.

A spokesman for Keanu said last night: "He is not making any comment at this time."

Jennifer Syme, a 29-year-old record industry worker, died instantly when she was thrown from her car after hitting three parked cars at 6.20am on Monday morning.

The Matrix star was reportedly devastated after her mother broke the news to him.

The couple were heartbroken last year when Syme gave birth to their stillborn baby girl.

The pair had no plans to marry at the time and after the birth their relationship cooled. But they weathered the tragedy and their relationship grew stronger.

The coroner is conducting an autopsy on Syme's body today to test for drugs or alcohol.
